Hull

An overview

The psychedelic toad of Hull!

The city of Kingston upon Hull (normally referred to as ‘Hull’) can be found in the East Riding of Yorkshire and has a student population of over 22,000. The abundance of young people in the city means there are many options for a night out. The bars and clubs are grouped together in several smaller areas of the city and are referred to as Old Town, New Town and George Street. The Old Town covers the area of Lowgate and runs through to Posterngate, where The Sugarmill can be found. The Sugarmill has three floors of bars and dancefloors and plays a varied mixture of current chart and R&B to Hip Hop, Indie and Dance. George Street can be found north of Lowgate and is the destination of choice for many students. The area is home to many bars including Pozition. Pozition often has cheap drinks offers and hosts a regular foam party, which is a lot of fun! The New Town is also popular with students and young people, many of the bars and clubs have ‘student only’ nights, so don’t forget your student card!

Red Gallery on Osborne Street opened in 1997 and provides visitors with an independent exhibition space and a platform for contemporary art. The gallery showcases a varied mixture of art exhibitions and also provides a platform for local art students to display their work. Red is a non-profit organisation, run by a small group of local artists. Ferens Art Gallery is located on Queen Victoria Square and admission is free. The gallery has a great collection of paintings and sculptures including works from Stanley Spencer, David Hockney, Gillian Wearing and Frans Hals. Guided tours are offered and there is also a charming café.

Hull provides excellent retail spaces and a diverse range of high street brands. The city has an extensive collection of designer outlets, boutiques, quirky independent stores and vintage arcades. St Stephen’s Retail and Leisure Centre is the latest offering to the city centre’s shopping facilities and also features a theatre, gym, cinema and several restaurants.
