A student’s honest opinion
“I really like how multicultural Leicester is. Coming from a small town I hadn’t met many people from other countries but now I know people from all over the world and can call some of them my best friends.
As for the town itself, Leicester has got lots of good amenities and if you like a cheesy night out, then this is the place to be! The nightlife is fine- after all a night if what you make of it! The town centre has had some revamping lately so it’s looking a bit nicer and has a cool shopping centre and new theatre- it’s really up and coming.” Charlotte, 20
Where can I study?
Leicester is home to two universities: the University of Leicester, and De Montford University. De Montford University is the larger of the two and provides places of study to around 21,000 students every year. De Montford University is a public research and teaching university and can be found in the centre of Leicester, along the River Soar. The university enjoys an excellent reputation particularly in fields relating to research. In fact, the Research Assessment Exercise recently voted 40% of the university’s research as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.
De Montford University offers great views of Leicester Castle and the 15th Century Magazine Gateway. Many of the campus facilities are contained within listed buildings, including Trinity House, which was originally constructed in the 14th century. The university has seen several recent developments including the £35 million Hugh Aston Building for Business and Law students. The university is organised into four faculties: Faculty of Art, Design and Humanities, Faculty of Business and Law, Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, and the Faculty of Technology. There is an additional Institute of Creative Technologies, which provides places of study to MA students.
The University of Leicester is home to around 15,000 students and is a research-orientated university in the centre of the city. The university has established itself as one of the leading research universities in the UK and consistently ranks within the top, in the national league tables. In 2012, The Complete University Guide listed Leicester University as 23rd. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings placed Leicester 197th in the list of top 400 universities in the world.
The University of Leicester is organized into four colleges, which are then organized into smaller schools and departments. The four main colleges in the university are: the College of Arts, Humanities and Law, College of medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology, College of Science and Engineering, and the College of Social Science.
The city of Leicester is located in the East Midlands of England in the county of Leicestershire. The city has a student population of over 36,000, which accounts for the buzzing nightlife. There are lots of bars, pubs and clubs scattered over the city, many of which attract party lovers from all over the Midlands. The area around Church Gate, Silver Street and High Street are particularly popular and can get busy with people bar and club hopping. Lamplighters is the place to go for rock and punk music, the venue is also home to occasional live gigs, so keep an eye out on their website so as not to miss out. If you are looking for house music and want to dance ‘til the small hours of the morning, then head to Rockstar at Lounge One. Rockstar can be found on Welford Road and is a popular student destination.
Science buffs can get their fix at The National Space Centre, just two miles from the city centre. The centre is one of Leicester’s leading visitor attractions and is dedicated to the science of space and astronomy. The centre is formed from a partnership between the University of Leicester’s Space Research Centre and the local government, and features six galleries of exhibits, a planetarium and a Digistar Dome. Visitors to the centre have the chance to see The Soyuz 7K OK(A) Spacecraft, the only known Soyuz spacecraft in Europe.
Phoenix Square (previously Leicester Digital Media Centre) is a popular student hangout. The building is home to a digital exhibition space, digital production facilities and two cinema screens. The cinemas offer films from the art house and world cinema genres and provide a great opportunity to discover some relatively unknown films.
A student’s honest opinion
“Hull is a real student city and I really think I made the right choice coming here.
Regarding the university, the facilities are top notch and my accommodation was pretty good too. Can’t say much for the catered halls though- food was pretty awful most nights!
The social life is good here too- a good mixture of clubs with different music as well as bars and pubs for quieter nights. And the Student Union always offers a cheap night out! Failing that most students end up on George Street.
Anyone who wants a to attend a pretty decent uni, make lots of friends and have a good time should consider coming to Hull.” Zach, 20
